Changing your mortgage insurance in France when you live abroad
You signed your French mortgage and now live outside France? You can often replace the insurance. Here is how, and the trap to avoid.
After signing, loan insurance can generally be replaced (substitution) by a contract with equivalent cover. Timing rules depend on your loan: we check what applies to you.
Can I still change after signing?
In France, it is generally possible to replace the insurance of a loan after signing, provided the new contract offers cover equivalent to what the bank requires. The right to change at any time under the Lemoine law is aimed first at residential mortgages taken by individuals; we check what applies to your loan and your non-resident situation.
Why non-residents change
- The cost is too high for the same cover
- The policy was questioned after a move abroad
- The cover no longer fits your situation
Never cancel before the bank agrees
Do not cancel your old policy before the bank has accepted the new one: your loan must stay insured at all times. We manage the sequence.
